Nestled in the rugged mountains of northern Ethiopia, is the small village of Lalibela.
This is where 11 churches were carved both inside and out from a single rock, and connected by an extensive system of drainage ditches, tunnels and passageways.
All of the churches were carved out of volcanic rock, some being carved into cliffs while others stand as isolated blocks and all were built from the top down. Everywhere in the world structures are built from the ground up. There is nothing comparable on Earth.
They are the largest monolithic temples in the world, and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, yet much mystery still surrounds their construction.
